| Job Title: | Adjust Instructor (Internship Coordinator) |
| Organization: | Program for Women in Politics and Public Policy, UMass Boston |
| Region: | East Coast |
| Description: | The two-semester Graduate Certificate Program for Women in Politics and Public Policy (WPPP) at the University of Massachusetts Boston seeks applications for an adjunct instructor for a two-course sequence (Fall Internship and Spring Internship). The instructor in this position oversees all aspects of the internship component of the program. In close consultation with the instructor, the women in the WPPP graduate certificate program are matched with a city, state, or federal government agency, with state legislators, in a lobbying or research organization, or in a non-profit organization whose work is directly related to public policy and/or political participation. The instructor meets regularly with the students individually and in groups at times that are mutually convenient (day and evening) to determine the students' individual professional goals; matches them with substantive policy internships; communicates with state legislators, non-profit organizations, and state and local public agencies; and guides students through readings and written assignments to integrate their internship experiences with what they are learning in the other required courses. While there are no weekly class sessions, besides the individual and small group meetings, there are required monthly internship classes, which take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The class size typically ranges from 17-20. This is a non-tenure-track, part-time adjunct position for the initial period of one year, beginning on August 15, 2012, with likelihood of annual renewal. Only individuals who can commit to both semesters will be considered for this two-course sequence. The adjunct instructor provides instruction at the graduate level in the Women in Politics and Public Policy Program (http://www.umb.edu/academics/mgs/publicpolicy_publicaffairs/graduate/wppp_gradcert/), which is located in the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs of the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies. The program is administered through University College, and the basic UC faculty salary per course is $4681 (i.e., $9632 for the two-course sequence). Responsibilities include: update the syllabi for the two semester-long courses, with relevant readings and activities to enhance learning; coordinate internship placements; monitor progress throughout the year in phone and personal meetings; communicate with current internship supervisors to monitor intern progress and to assure positive relationships between program and internship organization; develop potential new internships; identify, update and maintain a database and/or other information on internships available to students in the program. Requirements: BA required; graduate degree strongly preferred; 3-5 years' experience in coordinating internship programs and/or program administration and knowledge of state, local, and non-profit organizations. Graduate Certificate or Master's Degree in related field preferred. Demonstrated expertise in working with women who come from backgrounds that are very diverse: racially, economically, by sexual orientation, etc. This position also requires considerable time and effort during early fall (and some time in mid-to-late August) to assure that all students are successfully engaged in a substantive internship placement tailored to their professional goals by October. Extensive knowledge of Massachusetts government offices and non-profit organizations essential. Additional Information: UMass Boston is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Title IX employer. Application Instructions: If this position interests you, please submit your application consisting of a CV with a cover letter, a statement about your teaching and work experience and the names and email addresses of three references to PWPPP@umb.edu. Review of applications has begun and will continue until the position is filled. |
