The Racial Justice Program (RJP) of the ACLU's National office in New York City is seeking applications for the full-time position of Legal Administrative Assistant. OVERVIEW The ACLU's Racial Justice Program (RJP) attorneys and staff work on a broad range of racial justice issues, particularly in the areas of criminal justice and education. In the area of criminal justice, we are dedicated to reducing the unwarranted and disproportionate targeting and incarceration of people of color. In the area of education, we seek to ensure that all children have access to quality education, regardless of race or ethnicity. Specifically, we have filed civil challenges to the inadequate provision of indigent criminal and juvenile defense, racial profiling, and disparate educational opportunities, and we advocate against the racially-disproportionate imposition of incarceration and school discipline. The Legal Administrative Assistant will support three or more professional staff from the RJP team. She or he will attend regular staff meetings and will have the opportunity to learn about protecting the rights of communities of color. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Handle general administrative duties for the Program including processing invoices, tracking expenses and case costs, preparing expense reports, ordering supplies, etc. Prepare, type and proofread legal and other documents. Answer telephones, route calls and take messages. Conduct research using various research vehicles, including legal databases, internet sources and interviews. Maintain and organize electronic and paper files; update various mailing lists. Handle travel arrangements. Schedule meetings and conference calls; prepare relevant materials. Handle copying jobs, distribute mail and perform other administrative office duties as assigned. REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree and/or 1-2 years of work experience preferred. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and WordPerfect); experience conducting internet research. Must be extremely organized and able to multi-task and meet deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills; excellent telephone manner. Excellent writing and proofreading skills. Must be able to work independently as well as within a team. A commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU. COMPENSATION Salary for this position is $41,586. Generous benefits package provided.
