The Advocacy Department The Advocacy Department develops and executes public advocacy campaigns to further the NYCLU?s mission to defend and promote civil liberties and civil rights throughout New York State. The department influences public policy through grassroots organizing, public education, coalition building, online activism and direct lobbying of lawmakers. Summary of the Position The NYCLU is seeking law students to participate in NYCLU?s work combating stop-and-frisk abuses by the NYPD. In June 2012, the NYCLU unveiled ?Stop and Frisk Watch,? a free and innovative smart phone application that empowers New Yorkers to monitor police activity and hold the NYPD accountable for unlawful stop-and-frisk encounters and other police misconduct. The app allows bystanders to fully document police encounters and alert community members when a street stop is in progress. Students will be responsible for reviewing video submissions from the app for examples of police misconduct, sorting and storing video data, and following up on videos that depict possible wrongdoing.
