Job Title: USLP Legal Fellow 2013
Organization: Center for Reproductive Rights
Region: East Coast
Description: Legal Fellow, United States Legal Program Center for Reproductive Rights

Founded in 1992 and located in New York City, the Center for Reproductive Rights is a non-profit organization that promotes women's equality worldwide by securing reproductive rights in constitutional and international human rights law. Its mission is straightforward and ambitious: to advance reproductive health and rights as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect and fulfill. The Center is unmatched as a reproductive rights organization in its expertise on U.S. constitutional law, comparative law, and international human rights law. In the U.S. the Center?s preeminent litigation team has helped millions of women and their families by securing government funding for abortions; striking down abortion bans and other access restrictions; and protecting teens? access to confidential reproductive healthcare services and information.

During the past 20 years, Center attorneys have been counsel in virtually every major U.S. Supreme Court case about reproductive rights. In the last two years, the Center litigated over 20 cases on a range of reproductive rights issues. In addition to the U.S. legal program?s ground-breaking litigation, we have also expanded our advocacy work through (1) the integration of human rights strategies we have pioneered internationally into our domestic work and (2) increased strategic legislative advocacy at the federal and state level. The Center?s Law School Initiative ?launched in 2008 ?promotes legal scholarship and teaching on reproductive health and human rights to shape the thinking of the next generation of lawyers, judges, and policymakers.

The new fellow will join the Center at an exciting time for the institution and at a critical time for the nation. As opponents of women?s rights are mounting a scorched-earth campaign to turn back decades of hard-won progress, the Center is fighting back with short-, medium-, and long-term strategies, embodied in a new strategic plan launched in 2012.

Responsibilities: U.S. Legal Fellows play an integral role in the department?s work, which includes trial court and appellate litigation; human rights advocacy; legislative and other advocacy projects; drafting of public education materials; public speaking; and legal analyses of state legislation. Some travel is required.

Qualifications: Juris Doctor degree. Applicants should be self-motivated, capable of complex legal analytical work and have an ability to write clearly and effectively. Knowledge of, or commitment to, reproductive rights or other civil rights and justice issues is desirable.

These are two-year fellowships. The positions are full-time, beginning in the Fall of 2013 (an earlier start date may be possible if desired by the fellow), and based in New York City.
