Job Title: Director of Public Policy
Organization: Girls Incorporated
Region: DC Metro Region
Description: Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through life-changing programs and experiences that help girls navigate gender, economic, and social barriers. Research-based curricula, delivered by trained, mentoring professionals in a positive all-girl environment equip girls to achieve academically; lead healthy and physically active lives; manage money; navigate media messages; and discover an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. The network of local Girls Inc. nonprofit organizations serves 125,000 girls ages 6 - 18 annually across the United States and Canada.

Summary:
The Director of Public Policy will be responsible for directing the public policy agenda of Girls Inc. and building strategic relationships in Washington to advance the Girls Inc. network. S/he will report to the President and CEO, and be a member of the Management Team.

Responsibilities:
1. Identify public policy issues affecting girls and Girls Inc. Take appropriate legislative action consonant with policies and resources, including correspondence, meetings with Congressional offices and executive agencies, grassroots campaigns, etc. Consult with and inform CEO, Management Team, and affiliates on public policy issues as necessary.

2. Work in coalition with allied organizations to advocate for policies that promote girls? education, health, and independence.

3. Build the Girls Inc. brand in Washington DC; establish Girls Inc. as the expert on girls and voice for girls on key issues affecting them. Seek opportunities for visibility on public policy issues affecting girls, including Congressional hearings, briefings, and conferences. Prepare CEO, girls, and others for appearances. Coordinate closely with Director of Marketing and Communications.

4. Build Affiliate capacity and desire to establish relationships with policymakers and be advocates for girls with federal and local leaders. Engage them when appropriate in above work when there is opportunity for visibility or when their voice is needed.

5. Build relationships within federal agencies and Congress that enhance organization?s success in applying for federal funding.

6. Maintain currency of Advocacy Statements including identifying new issues and preparing materials for National Board and Council action.

7. Undertake other organizational tasks as requested by CEO.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
Any staff located in Washington office. (none at present)

Qualifications:
Education: College degree, preferably in related field.

Experience: At least five years in public policy or governmental relations position, knowledge of Washington, knowledge of and commitment to national girls' or youth issues; awareness of new and emerging issues.

Skills: Superior writing and public speaking skills; ability to collaborate, to lead and build teams, and inspire others' performance; ability to influence policy through legislative and executive branch implementation process.
