Job Title: Lead Teacher
Organization: Girls for Gender Equity

Description: Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) is an
intergenerational, grassroots organization
committed to the physical, psychological, social
and economic development of girls and women.
Through education, organizing and physical
fitness, GGE encourages communities to remove
barriers and create opportunities for girls and
women to live self-determined lives. GGE targets
New York City public schools based in underserved
communities of color as sites to mobilize and
collectively work toward gender, race and class
equity. GGE is the umbrella organization for three
core programs and multiyear campaigns -- Community
Organizing, Urban Leaders Academy and Health and
Fitness. GGE has established a dual approach to
grassroots organizing and direct service that
develops youth leadership and strengthens
resources within the communities we serve.
Urban Leaders Academy (ULA) is a holistic
afterschool program based in three middle schools
in Brooklyn, New York. ULA supports middle school
students, ages eleven to thirteen in gaining
critical thinking skills through a social justice
lens. ULA teachers weave GGE?s gender/race/class
analysis throughout all of their support to
students, including: the achievement of academic
excellence, exploration of career options and
higher education and the cultivation of healthy
lifestyles.
At this critical moment in our organization?s
growth, we are seeking a part-time GGE Staff Lead
Teacher to join our executive team. This is an
exciting opportunity to help shape and manage the
effective delivery of GGE?s community organizing
programs and services, from a unique
administrative and teaching position that requires
a highly organized, energetic, and social justice-
oriented leader.
Logistics
-Part-Time : T/W/R 2:30 pm -5:00 pm
-1 Paid Monthly staff meetings 4:00- 5:30
pm
-3 Professional Development Series per Unit
-10 hours of curriculum development prior
to program start (maximum)
-1 school year commitment required
(September -June)
Duties and Responsibilities
Furthering GGE?s Mission and Vision
-Represent GGE as an organization and
establish a presence at assigned host school site
-Ensure that assigned host school site
programming embodies the mission and vision of GGE
-Ensure that teaching, facilitation, and
programming embodies a gender/race/class analysis
Curriculum Development and Facilitation
-Assist in adapting Urban Leaders
Curriculum to meet specific needs and interests of
assigned host school site.
-Facilitate hands on Urban Leaders
Curriculum lessons in both whole class and small
group settings which focus on one of more of the
following themes: leadership, health and fitness,
food justice and environment
Supervision and Program Coordination
-Supervise and manage student behavior
during extracurricular workshop provided by
teaching artists, peer mentors, and other
community members
-Supervise and support GGE MSW & high
school interns
-Chaperone off site field trips as needed
-Support Site Coordinator with any
additional task during programming
Evaluation
-Actively support program evaluation
efforts by providing regular, detailed feedback to
inform ongoing program design and improvement
-Collect and evaluate student work weekly
Professional Development
-Attend Professional Development trainings
and staff meetings
-Actively seek supervision from Director of
ULA as needed
-Self-advocate for needs and interests
pertaining to strengthening social justice
analysis
Qualifications
-Minimum 2 years of teaching or relevant
experience
-Demonstrated commitment to youth
development and ability to attract and engage a
diverse group of students at varying levels of
academic skill
-Demonstrated commitment to continuous
learning and application of social justice
principles to programming with integrity
-Excellent program planning, organizing,
oral communication and writing skills
-Creative approach to implementing and
monitoring programming
-Strong organizational, communication and
delegation skills for supervising staff and
participants
