| Description: | For 47 years, Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) has worked nationally and in its home community of Washington, D.C. to achieve economic security and equality of opportunity for women, girls, elders and families. WOW is recognized nationally for its advocacy, research and technical assistance. For the past five years, WOW?s Elder Economic Security Initiative (Elder Initiative) has been building economic security for retirees and those aging out of the workforce. WOW works in Washington, DC to influence federal policy and assists 17 lead State Partners? efforts to improve state and local policy. Elder Initiative goals include: 1) raising awareness of elder financial needs 2) building State Partner capacity and influence 3) creating lasting change on the local, state and federal levels 4) growing the Initiative and its influence 5) documenting and sustaining effective Initiative and related efforts to help seniors. A key component of the Initiative is the Elder Economic Security Standard Index (Elder Index), a measure of well-being that determines the income and supports needed for older adults to meet their basic needs. In this new phase of the project, WOW will focus intensively on institutionalizing the economic security framework and the Elder Index in direct service and public policy in New Jersey and Massachusetts. WOW will also continue to support state partners and work to expand the Elder Initiative network. Elder Initiative Communications Officer Position: The Communications Officer will be responsible for developing and leading the Elder Initiative?s media and communications strategy, nationally and in the target states. The Elder Initiative Communications Officer is a member of the Elder Initiative and the National Program teams at WOW and will report to the Elder Initiative Project Director. Responsibilities: -With the WOW Elder Initiative team and the Elder Initiative State Partner, develop a detailed state strategic engagement plan that outlines overall objectives, key strategies and core activities for achieving objectives -Develop and implement a communications-specific work plan -Identify, build and maintain relationships with media contacts, with emphasis on New Jersey and Massachusetts; aggressively pitch and pursue earned media opportunities, specifically targeting local and statewide outlets in New Jersey and Massachusetts in order to meet predefined objectives and goals -Provide social media and earned media strategy guidance to State Partners and to two Governmental Relations Consultants on-site, via the internet and by telephone -Develop language and messaging to be used in efforts to institutionalize the Elder Index framework in planning, program practice and law. -Develop language and messaging to be used in outreach to policymakers, the media, elders and the general public -Develop talking points, press releases, emails to policymakers and the media, and other materials -Help WOW staff refine research, publications and legislative language -Contribute to the design and maintenance of the WOW website, blog, Economic Security Database and other e-communications -Help WOW staff refine in-house layout and design of materials -Create templates for Letters to the Editor, op-eds, fact sheets, blogs and other educational and outreach materials for use by WOW and state and local partners -React to state-level policy decisions and news in a timely manner through e-communications, social media and press releases -Manage communications project timelines and ensure tasks are completed -Participate in Initiative and National Economic Security team meetings and activities -Contribute to the development of WOW?s inter-generational public policy agenda Qualifications: -Previous experience managing communications, preferably within non-profit policy advocacy; -Acute awareness of current events and political environments at the state and national levels; -Familiarity with public policies affecting the aging population and/or low- and moderate-income women preferred; -Ability to produce professional communications materials (press releases, talking points, fact sheets, reports, etc.) under deadline; -The ability to communicate complex information, including quantitative research, clearly in writing and in oral presentations to a range of audiences; -Experience navigating potentially complex organizational partner relationships; -Ability to multitask and work independently; -Knowledge of or connections with the media and political establishments in New Jersey or Massachusetts a plus; -Strong interpersonal skills; -Integrated social media experience; -Excellent written and verbal communication skills; -Intermediate or better computer skills (MS Office , other); -Experience producing communications materials using Adobe InDesign a plus; and -Bachelor?s degree in communications or journalism or equivalent experience. Compensation: This is a full-time position. Compensation is commensurate with experience and engagement level.
