Action Teams to Help Afghan Women

Action Teams to Help Afghan Women will respond to the current women's rights and humanitarian crises in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Because of the devastating situation for Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan, we have broadened the mission of our Back to School Campaign in order to address not only the need for educational opportunities for Afghan women and girls, but also their health needs and the dire conditions in the region.

What You Can Do

By forming an action team made up of your friends, neighbors, colleagues or family members, you can make a difference in the future of Afghan women and girls. Your action team can help in two major ways:

  • Providing direct assistance to Afghan women-led organizations that provide health, education, training, and/or relief services.

  • Participating in petition drives to urge the U.S. to do everything in its power to restore the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, to provide increased funding for humanitarian and reconstruction programs, and to ensure that Afghan women play a leadership role in the rebuilding of Afghanistan.

The Current Humanitarian Crisis

Women have been the first victims of the Taliban. Wherever the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, they banned women from working, prohibited women and girls from attending school, and forbid women from leaving their homes without the accompaniment of a close male relative and the head-to-toe burqa shroud. Women who violate Taliban decrees have been beaten, imprisoned, or even killed. Afghan women and girls pleaded with the world to free them from the grips of the brutal Taliban militia and warned that the Taliban's threat to humanity would extend beyond the borders of Afghanistan.

For years, the Feminist Majority Foundation also has been urging a substantial increase in humanitarian aid for women and girls in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees, 75% of which are women and children. Humanitarian assistance is provided through United Nations agencies, international NGOs and Afghan women's organizations.

We must press for the establishment of democracy and the inclusion of women leaders in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. The restoration of constitutional democracy in Afghanistan is the only means by which Afghan women will ever gain their freedom and long-term global security can ever be achieved. At the same time that terrorism is eliminated, the full rights of women must be restored and commitments must be made to provide humanitarian assistance and to help rebuild the economy and democratic infrastructure of Afghanistan. The rebirth of a peaceful, stable, and democratic Afghanistan must include Afghan women.

Direct Assistance

You can make a difference in the futures of Afghan women and girls by organizing an action team to support the work of nonprofit, non-governmental organizations led by Afghan women that are providing education, health, and relief services to Afghan women and girls who are living as refugees in Pakistan and where possible in Afghanistan. Action teams can be made up of a group of friends, family members, or colleagues, a classroom, a school, a girl scout group, or a community organization.

$2000 pays for a doctor's salary for a year to provide healthcare to women
$1000 will buy a computer, printer, and stabilizer for an NGO office or computer course
$600 pays for a teacher's salary for a year
$300 pays for student armchairs for a classroom
$150 pays for classroom chalk boards for a school
$60 supplies notebooks, pencils, and pencil sharpeners for 300 students

The future of a peaceful, stable, and democratic Afghanistan depends upon these Afghan women's organizations and the women to whom they are providing assistance and educational opportunities.

Petition Drive

Petition drives to increase public awareness about the plight of women and girls in Afghanistan and to demonstrate to policy makers the breadth of public support for the restoration of the rights of women in Afghanistan, for increased funding for humanitarian aid programs, and for making sure that Afghan women play a leadership role in rebuilding their country. Petitions are returned to the Feminist Majority so that they can be delivered to the State Department and White House along with thousands of other petitions from across the nation.
