Scottish Government to Provide Free Emergency Contraception

The Scottish government announced on Thursday that all community pharmacies will provide free over-the-counter emergency contraception. According to the Scotsman, the new policy will also include free testing and treatment for some sexually transmitted diseases, as well as treatment for tobacco addiction at some pharmacies.

According to the Daily Women's Health Report, emergency contraception is already available at no-cost with a prescription, but costs $51 without a prescription. The new policy will allow individual pharmacists opt-out if they choose. The government has not yet decided whether emergency contraception access will carry age restrictions.
