Iranian Women's Rights Activist Shirin Ebadi's Secretary Released from Prison

Jinus Sobhani, an employee of women's rights activist Shirin Ebadi, was released last week from prison in Iran after being held in solitary confinement for nearly two months. She had been denied the right to speak with attorneys or her family while confined and was finally released on 60,000 bail.

Sobhani worked as a secretary at Nobel Laureate Dr. Shirin Ebadi's human rights organization, the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), which was forcibly closed by Iranian authorities in December 2008.

Souhayr Belhassen, President of the International Federation for Human Rights, said in a press release "This release is a victory of human rights over arbitrariness. Over the past weeks, we have been closely following the case of Jinus and have repeatedly called for her release. However, we denounce the incredibly high amount of the bail, and recall that the DHRC is still arbitrarily closed down. The Observatory will remain definitely mobilized for the reopening of the DHRC."
