Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together the country's largest team of public interest lawyers, lobbyists, communication strategists, and members and activists in the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially for the most vulnerable in our society. The Washington Legislative Office (WLO) of the ACLU seeks applicants for the Spring 2013 Immigration Advocacy Internship in Washington, D.C. beginning in February 2013. OVERVIEW Founded in 1952, the Washington Legislative Office is responsible for advancing the civil liberties agenda of the national organization before Congress and the Executive Branch, as well as working with ACLU affiliates. INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW The Spring 2013 Immigration Advocacy Internship requires an 8-12 week commitment. The internship is part-time, with weekly hours that are negotiable. Since this is an unpaid internship, individuals are highly encouraged to seek funding from outside sources. Arrangements can be made with an educational institution for work/study or course credit. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES Interns will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of immigration policy matters, including prosecutorial discretion and deferred action. Working closely with Lobbyists and Policy Counsel, interns will learn all aspects of legislative/policy advocacy, including but not limited Researching the civil liberties implications of legislative proposals and tracking legislation. Assisting in drafting testimony for Congressional hearings. Attending hearings and preparing written reports. Attending coalition meetings as necessary, as well as liaising with partners and ACLU affiliates. Researching and drafting issue statements and blogs for posting on the ACLU's web page, newsletters and/or action alerts. DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS This internship is open to recent graduates or students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or professional program and will have completed at least their second year of college at the time the internship commences. Applicants must possess: Experience with immigration issues or working with immigrant communities. Excellent research, writing, analytical, and communication skills. The ability to work independently and to see projects through to completion. A commitment to civil liberties and demonstrated interest in immigrants' rights advocacy.
