Tuesday morning, Senator Susan Collins of Maine met with Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh this morning. Just 28% of women in the United States support his nomination, according to a new poll. Because women are still so underrepresented in the Senate, Senator Collins represents not only the state of Maine, but the voices of women across the United States. She must consider the overwhelming opposition by women to Brett Kavanaugh. We’re calling on Senator Collins to join with women across the country in firmly rejecting the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States.
A Statement from Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority Foundation:
“Every indication is that Brett Kavanaugh will gut Roe v. Wade which will lead to the criminalization of abortion in many states. Real women’s lives are at stake. Is Senator Collins willing to gamble with the lives and futures of young women? Senator Collins say she supports women and supports reproductive rights. Is she willing to throw the dice on this nomination and have women lose access to legal abortion and some forms of birth control? This fundamental right for women to make their own health decisions should not be on the basis on where a woman lives.
Looking at his record, Brett Kavanaugh should not be given the benefit of the doubt: too much is at stake for women with this nomination. Women’s lives depend on Senator Collins voting no on Brett Kavanaugh.”
