The National Association of Realtors’ 2003 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the percent of single women homebuyers rose more than any other group this year. The NAR survey showed that the percentage rose by 6 percent to make single women 21 percent of all homebuyers, according to the The Indianapolis Star. Single women are now the second largest segment of homebuyers, following married couples. Priscilla Russell, broker manager at Hall & Russell Real Estate Services, accounted for the changes as evidence of their increasing confidence and changes in society, according to the Star. She added that there are fewer institutional barriers for women who previously faced obstacles when trying to secure a mortgage from small banks who used to “frown on women buying houses alone.” Liz Grauerholz, associate professor of sociology at Purdue University, asserted that women are earning more money now than their mothers or grandmothers did and are waiting to get married, if at all, the Star reports.
