Today marks the long-awaited opening of the Elizabeth A Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. The 8,300 square foot center, on the fourth floor of the museum, aims to create a compelling and interactive environment to raise awareness and educate future generations about feminism’s impact on culture.
The Center will permanently house Judy Chicago’s famed feminist work “The Dinner Party.” The piece will be accompanied by rotating installations that highlight the lives of the women portrayed on the work’s 39 place settings and 999 gold-inscribed tiles. The first of these installations, “Pharaohs, Queens, and Goddesses,” will focus on women leaders and deities in Egyptian history (through September 16).
“Global Feminisms” (through July 1), the Center’s opening exhibition, spotlights international feminist art from 1990 to the present. Thematically arranged, multi-media works by more than 80 artists from nearly 50 countries explore diverse multicultural and intergenerational views of feminism.
Center namesake and benefactor, Elizabeth A. Sackler, is a philanthropist and art collector. She is a longtime friend of Judy Chicago’s and daughter of Arthur M. Sackler, who himself endowed a wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
