Laurie David, producer of An Inconvenient Truth, and singer Sheryl Crow concluded their two-week Stop Global Warming College Tour at George Washington University on Sunday. David, whose environmental activism and tour are featured in the current issue of Ms. magazine, told the crowd of 2,000, that “Hurricane Katrina is just a taste of what’s to come if we don’t stop global warming.” Rising sea levels displacing millions of people is just one result of global warming, according to David’s film, which won two Oscars. Scientists predict that we will begin to see drastic environmental changes in as few as ten years if we do not change our habits.
Stopping global warming, David said, is “not about sacrifice, it’s about change.” Carry your groceries in a durable canvas bag instead of plastic ones, she suggested. Unplug your cell phone charger when it is not in use; it uses energy anytime it is plugged in. “Be offended by how things are over-packaged,” she said. Recycle instead of contributing to the 2.5 million plastic bottles that are thrown away every hour.
The tour’s finale, fittingly held on Earth Day, included performances from singers Crow, Carole King, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill. Environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and David’s husband Larry David, co-creator of Seinfeld, also spoke.
