The vote to override President Bush’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program expansion is planned for October 18. A House procedural vote on Wednesday allowed Democrats to move the vote back while they work on gathering enough support for the required two-thirds majority to override Bush’s veto.
The bill, which would have allowed enrollment in the health insurance program for children from low-income families to increase from 6.6 million to 10 million, passed in the Senate with enough votes to override the veto. The House, however, was 19 votes short, reports CQ. There was a 21-point gender gap in the Congressional votes, with 72 percent of women voting in favor while only 51 percent of men did so.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, said that: “We’ve compromised all we can compromise,” reports the Associated Press.
