Dr. Irma McClaurin, a member of the Ms. Committee of Scholars, was named the 15th President of Shaw University late last week. Dr. McClaurin considers herself to be an activist anthropologist and taught anthropology, women’s and gender studies, African studies, and Latin American Studies during her tenure at the University of Florida. She later served as the Program Officer for Education and Scholarship at the Ford Foundation, where she worked with programs that supported both Black Studies and Women’s Studies. Most recently, McClaurin served as Associate Vice President of System Academic Administration and Executive Director of the Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center at the University of Minnesota. During a press conference announcing the appointment, McClaurin said, “I am honored and privileged to have this opportunity to lead an institution of Shaw’s caliber, with its deep history and rich tradition of education and scholarship…My goal is to reignite a vision of research, teaching, scholarship, and community engagement that prepares students to become engaged, challenging, optimistic, and socially responsible citizens in a diverse and global world. With the support and collaboration of Shaw’s illustrious trustees and alumni, its hopeful student body, its committed faculty and staff, and the larger Raleigh community, I have no doubt we will be successful.” Shaw University is located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is the oldest historically black college in the South. The university is a co-educational, private liberal arts school that is affiliated with the Baptist Church.
