MoveOn.org, a grassroots campaign founded in September ’98 by software developers Joan and Wes Blades to encourage Congress to “censure and move on,” rather than to hold an impeachment trial against President Clinton, solicited $10 million in pledges as part of its “We Will Remember” campaign.
The campaign’s goal is to oust Congressional members who voted for impeachment against the wishes of the majority of U.S. citizens. Contributions will be distributed to the political opponents of the pro-impeachment voters prior to the year 2000 elections.
Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike joined the campaign, which now boasts over 5,500 volunteers and 450,000 online supporters. Tens of thousands of citizens have signed MoveOn’s online petition.
“Some people think the public has a short memory, but they are mistaken,” said Wes Blades. “We will remember that these representatives do not reflect our values and do not hear our voice,” he added.
