Abortion May Become Legal in Kenya

A new government report released by the Kenya Family Health Programme recommends the repeal of Kenya’s anti-abortion laws. Stating that the medical evidence in favor of legal abortion was more compelling than the “perceived moral and legal need” for the current laws, the report, prepared by a Health Standards and Regulatory Services Department appointed team, urges legalization. Proponents of a proposal to legalize abortion have cited the need to end not only unwanted pregnancy but also unsafe, botched abortions. According to the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy, an estimated one-third of maternal deaths in Kenya are due to unsafe abortions.
