A Spanish feminist coalition, the State Network of Feminist Organizations, launched a campaign Friday to support the liberalization of abortion laws by Spains government. According to The Telegraph, reform of abortion laws is part of the social change program undertaken by Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, whose Socialist government has removed religion from the public education curriculum, reformed divorce laws, and legalized gay marriage since assuming to power in 2004.
Gynecologist Dr Isabel Serrano, a State Network of Feminist Organizations member, told The Guardian “It’s inconceivable that in Spain, which has some of the most progressive laws in the world, women are still being treated like children.” Network spokeswoman Angeles Alvarez told Agence France Presse “We are going to flood Spain with posters in response to the church’s alarmist campaign.”
Thousands of protests have taken place across Spain against abortion reform. Tens of thousands of anti-abortion protesters marched in Madrid and Barcelona this weekend.
