Abortion Rights Advocates Hold Supreme Court Rally

Four leading pro-choice groups held a rally in support of abortion rights at the US Supreme Court on Saturday. The event, which drew over 100 people, kicked off a speaking tour to raise awareness about the threats to reproductive rights in advance of the planned March for Freedom of Choice on April 25, 2004 in Washington, DC. The crowd was composed mostly of young people, about 50 of whom attended a follow-up briefing on campus organizing for the March.

Speakers at the rally included Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority; Kate Michelman, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America; Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women (NOW); and Jatrice Martel Gaiter, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington. “Everywhere that I go in this country people come up and ask me: ‘When are we going to march again?’ The time is now. We must sound the alarm that women’s fundamental rights are in danger,” said Smeal.
