Alabama Allows Anti-Choice License Plates

An Alabama anti-abortion group has won approval from the state’s license plate committee for an anti-choice car tag that will generate funds for its programs. Citing the $400,000 already raised through sales of the Florida “Choose Life” plates, Alabama anti-abortion activists hope to accomplish the same. Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana all offer “Choose Life” car tags, and all three states are being challenged in court on the issue. Pro-choice groups have long opposed state funding of anti-abortion license plates, citing concerns over separation of church and state and the legitimacy of services offered by so-called crisis pregnancy centers which claim to help pregnant women but often spread false information about abortion, use coercive techniques, and proselytize.
