Anti-Abortion Groups Launch Campaign Aimed at U.S. Supreme Court

A coalition of 26 anti-abortion groups announced plans today to launch a $2 million campaign to pressure President Bush and the U.S. Senate to fill Supreme Court vacancies with anti-abortion nominees. Still stinging from a perceived defeat on Bush’s decision on stem cell research, anti-abortion forces vowed to present a unified and aggressive front against judicial nominees who support abortion rights. Bush has already promised to nominate judicial appointments in the likes of Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, two staunch opponents to abortion rights. During his administration, Bush could appoint more than 30% of federal appeals court judges and possibly several Supreme Court justices. This is a critical moment for the U.S. Supreme Court. Roe v. Wade is upheld by just one vote. One new appointment of a Justice who does not support the constitutional right to choose an abortion could overturn this historic decision for American women. Do not stand idly by while George Bush and his extremist allies try to reshape the Supreme Court and reverse the progress this country has made.
