APA Condemns “Gay Conversion” Therapy

The board of the American Psychiatric Association condemned therapies meant to convert gays to heterosexuals, arguing that it could cause “depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior.” APA Joint Committee on Public Affairs head Nada Stotland stated, “All the evidence would indicate this is the way people are born. We treat disease, not the way people are.”

Fundamentalist Christian groups Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, and the Christian Coalition created a national advertising campaign that urges gays and lesbians to undergo “reparative therapy” and convert to heterosexuality.

The American Psychological Association came out against gay conversion therapies last year.
