About 500 lesbian and gay citizens led a protest against the U.S.’ Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) after two HIV-positive individuals were denied entrance to a flight bound for the United States.
The travelers were en route to a conference sponsored by the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, the world’s largest Christian denomination for lesbians and gays. The group’s founder, Reverend Troy Perry, stated, “We are the only country who will not permit people with HIV and AIDS to come into the country.” The Reverend called the policy “crazy,” noting that “HIV is not easy to catch.”
