British Girl Guides Add Safe Sex to Skill Set

In an effort to stay relevant with the needs and concerns of young women and girls, the British Girl Guides — the UK’s equivalent to the Girl Scouts — have added safe sex to their list of important skills. The organization polled 1,000 members aged 7-25 in order to update their “guide to living for modern girls.”

The results of the poll showed that Senior Guides (aged 16 and up) ranked safe sex, along with money management, lifesaving skills, public speaking, and creating a great resume, among the highest of their concerns. Younger girls placed value on healthy cooking, pitching a tent, team leadership, standing up to boys, safe web-surfing, and crossing the street safely, reported United Press International.

Since its creation in 1910, the Skills Guide has changed dramatically from its original version, which instructed Girl Guides on skills like ironing and milking cows. Chief Guide Liz Burnley said the organization has always been dedicated to giving girls the skills they need, saying that the standards of important skills “don’t stand still, which is why we constantly ask our members what they think, so that we can continue to be truly relevant to tomorrow’s young women,” United Press International reports.
