As most abortion rights activists anticipated, the Bush administration officially announced that the government will apply the same restrictions on Medicaid funding for mifepristone as it has for surgical abortions. The Department of Health and Human Services, led by anti-choice Secretary Tommy Thompson, sent a letter to state Medicaid directors last week announcing that the government would provide funds for low income women to take the early abortion pill only in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment. The letter also informed states that they can apply any state restrictions on surgical abortion to mifepristone.
