Bush Installs Bolton as UN Ambassador in Recess Appointment

President Bush appointed John Bolton as the US Ambassador to the United Nations today, bypassing the Senate. This appointment was made even after it was revealed that Bolton answered a Senate questionnaire inaccurately, stating that he had not been interviewed as part of any administrative investigation within the last five years. In fact, he was interviewed by the State Department’s inspector general in an investigation into the false intelligence reports in 2003 that Iraq was trying to purchase uranium from Africa. Thirty-six Senators signed a letter to President Bush last week urging him not to give Bolton a recess appointment because he was “not truthful” in the confirmation process, according to the New York Times. “He’s damaged goods,” said Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT), according to Reuters. “This is a person who lacks credibility.”
