Canadian Minister Promises To Improve Military Harassment Situation

Among increasing reports of sexual harassment in the Canadian military, Canadian Defense Minister Art Eggelton announced Monday that the necessary changes will be made in order to show that military officials want ” men and women to be able to work side-by-side in a harassment-free, abuse-free environment.”

The press conference comes in response to a recent Maclean’s article that cited a commanding officer whose career was stunted after defending a female solider. The officer, Sylvie Savard, said after receiving compensation and an apology six years later from the man who harassed her, the ordeal had already ruined her military career and her marriage. In the beginning of the year, the minister’s office set up a sexual harassment hotline which has to date received over one hundred calls.
