The state attorney’s office in Cecil County Maryland dismissed charges against Dr. Steven Brigham and Dr. Nicola Riley for allegedly violating the state’s fetal homicide law and killing “five viable fetuses.” This is the first time that this law was used to charge medical doctors.
Dr. Steven Brigham owns clinics in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Maryland, as well as the clinic that was firebombed in Florida earlier this year. He was arrested on December 28 in New Jersey, and Dr. Riley was arrested in Salt Lake City.
Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation indicated that the state’s medical licensing board should have been responsible for determining whether the doctors had provided substandard care and that the fetal homicide laws “should not be applied…in this manner.”
