The Coalition for Firefighters’ Civil Rights plans to request action from the Boston City Council amid claims that gay and minority firefighters are subject to rampant discrimination that has been largely ignored by the department. At the Thursday City Council hearing, the Coalition will urge the creation of a committee to deal with the department’s issues and the hiring of fire commissioner from outside of the department.
The firefighters complaints have already piqued the attention of the Justice Department, which began interviewing minority firefighters in March. The interviews began on the heals of a city-commissioned report that deemed the department to be lacking in administrative areas, including minority recruitment.
