Chlamydia Leading Cause of Ectopic Pregnancies

Infections resulting from Chlamydia may be a primary cause for ectopic pregnancies, a new study has found.

Researchers at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and Allegheny University of the Health Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania have concluded that “a higher proportion of ectopic pregnancies than was believed previously may be attributable to infection of the fallopian tubes by Chlamydia trachomatis.”

It has been assumed for some time that scarring from Chlamydia may be a cause of many ectopic pregnancies. If these pregnancies are left undiagnosed and untreated they can lead to tube rupture and hemorrhage that may be fatal.
