Costly CA Same-Sex Marriage Battle Intensifies

Recent polls of California voters show a shift toward voting ‘Yes’ on Proposition 8, which seeks to ban same-sex marriage by constitutionally defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Internal polling from Equality California, which opposes Proposition 8 indicates that supporters of the initiative are leading by 47 percent to 42 percent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Proposition 8 supporters have raised $25.4 million for their campaign while opponents have raised only $15.8 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“After November 4, it’s possible the door to having that experience of a legally recognized marriage will be closed…Many couples have, to some degree, rushed to get married in order to assure that they are legally recognized” Kate Kendall, Executive Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights told the New York Times.
