Creech Again Challenges Methodist Church

The Rev. Jimmy Creech of Raleigh, N.C., has once again challenged the Methodist Church’s ban on same-sex unions by uniting Jim Raymer and Larry Ellis in a ceremony this Saturday.

Creech was dismissed from the First United Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska last year after performing a commitment ceremony for two women and was narrowly acquitted in a United Methodist Church trial. At the time Creech performed the Nebraska ceremony, the Methodist Church had not yet officially banned the performance of same-sex unions, but had advised against the practice in established guidelines.

Creech stated that, although has now clearly violated Church law and risks losing his ministerial powers, he does not doubt that his actions were just. “It was not a tough decision at all,” said Creech. “I was honored that they asked me and very glad to do it.”
