The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) and other women’s right groups have covered the situation in Afghanistan since the Taliban militia took control of the country in 1996 and imposed brutal gender apartheid on the women and girls of Afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have been displaced from their homes in Afghanistan. Refugees are fleeing to the neighboring Pakistan border, where they are being turned away. Thousands of refugees living in camps face unsanitary, inhumane conditions as they deal with starvation and inadequate shelter against the bitter winter winds. The situation in Afghanistan is compounded by the worst drought to hit the country in 30 years and a bitterly cold winter.
