Dire Situation in Afghanistan Finally Reaches US National Press

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) and other women’s right groups have covered the situation in Afghanistan since the Taliban militia took control of the country in 1996 and imposed brutal gender apartheid on the women and girls of Afghanistan. FMF has also covered the effects of the worst drought to hit the country in 30 years. Today the news of the starvation, drought, freezing temperatures and fierce warring Afghan refugees endure every day reached the front page of the Washington Post.

Hundreds of thousands of refugees have been displaced from their homes in Afghanistan. Refugees are fleeing to the neighboring Pakistan border, where they are being turned away. Thousands of refugees living in camps face unsanitary, inhumane conditions as they deal with starvation and inadequate shelter against the bitter winter winds. The situation in Afghanistan is compounded by the worst drought to hit the country in 30 years and a bitterly cold winter.

The situation in Afghanistan is deadly, join the Feminist Majority Foundation’s Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid today.

Help the women and girls of Afghanistan! Take action today and urge President Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell to continue to withhold United Nations recognition of the Taliban militia until the rights of Afghan women and girls are fully and permanently restored, increase humanitarian assistance, and allow more Afghan women and girls into the US as refugees.
