Fourteen doctors who provided or helped women access abortion before it was legalized in the US issued a joint statement this week calling for a pro-choice justice to replace former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. The joint statement was issued in by Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health. The organization has also created a website, www.voicesofchoice.org, featuring doctors’ descriptions of their experience helping women get abortions before Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the US, and urging physicians to join the fight to ensure the confirmation of a justice committed to protecting Roe.
“This Supreme Court nomination may be the most important one in our lifetimes. We’re speaking out because we know what’s at stake,” said the doctors in their statement. “As physicians who provided or facilitated abortions before Roe v. Wade, we saw the horrors of illegal abortion first-handÉ.We’ve lived in an America where women suffered tragically and needlessly, and we don’t want anyone to live through that again.”
“We need a justice who understands the legal, medical, public health and social significance of Roe v. Wade. We need a justice who sees why increased restrictions on abortion interfere with the provision of healthcare and endanger women. And we need a justice who won’t make our country repeat a dark chapter of its history.”
