Election of Pelosi as Democratic Whip Ð WomenÕs Rights Victory

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (CA) became the highest-ranking women in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives when House Democrats elected her Democratic Whip, the first Italian-American to hold the post. With this election, Pelosi becomes second in command under House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (MO) and has positioned herself to someday become speaker of the House if Democrats regain the majority. Feminist Majority staff joined Pelosi to celebrate her victory last night. Pelosi remains staunchly pro-choice and has a strong women’s rights voting record. Her focus in the House has been on international family planning, AIDS prevention, human rights in China, and environmental causes. She is also the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. Pelosi, who hails from San Francisco, represents the 8th Congressional District in California where she has been active in politics since the 1970s. She is married to Paul F. Pelosi and has five children.
