Ellen Finale to Air Tonight

The season finale of Ellen, the first television program with an openly lesbian main character, will air tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

A “mockumentary” finale, hosted by journalist Linda Ellerbee, features the media’s response to and portrayal of social issues during the past fifty years. Ellen will ponder the significance of many historic television moments, including the not-so-long-ago age of I Love Lucy, when television censors banned open discussion of pregnancy and would not allow women to appear visibly pregnant on screen.

Guest stars for the finale include Helen Hunt, Jada Pinkett Smith, Woody Harrelson, Glenn Close, Cindy Crawford, Julianna Margulies, Jennifer Aniston, Christine Lahti, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Phil Donahue, Tim Conway, Bea Arthur, Richard Benjamin, Kathy Najimy, Orson Bean and Diahann Carroll.

The Human Rights Campaign has joined with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), Planet Out, and other gay advocacy organizations to offer their support to Ellen. Go to http://www.hrc.org/ellen/index.html to offer your support to Ellen by writing letters to television networks, newspapers and other media, offering your personal thanks to Ellen Degeneres, and joining an online chat.

Please don’t let Ellen end without expressing your support for the show and your appreciation for Ellen’s courage.
