EMILY’s List founder and president Ellen Malcolm announced yesterday that she will step down as the president of the organization. The Board of Directors has named Stephanie Schriock, a former Senate Chief of Staff, to be its new leader. Malcolm will continue her involvement as Chairwoman of the Board of Directors. Schriock began her political career as a campaign fundraiser and also has a lengthy resume of managing successful campaigns. Most recently she served as campaign manager for now Senator Al Franken (D-MN) in 2008 and served as Senator Jon Tester’s (D-MT) Chief of Staff through 2009. Senator Tester said in a statement that “Stephanie very quickly earns the respect of everyone she meets because she’s a darn good leader and a great person to work with…Although she’ll be sorely missed in my office, her passion for doing what’s right will serve our entire country — and our kids and grandkids — for the better.” In regards to her new position, Schriock said, “The dedicated members of EMILY’s List, two decades of courageous women candidates and the amazing Ellen Malcolm have fundamentally changed the face of Congress and of leadership in our country. I look forward to growing the organization and reaching out to the millions of young women who will further change the future of politics and America.” Under Ellen Malcolm’s leadership, EMILY’s List has helped elect 80 pro-choice Democratic women to the US Congress, 15 to the Senate, 9 governors, and hundreds of women to state and local office. “We’ve set the stage for making history,” Malcolm said, “We’ve had astonishing victories. The U.S. House is a very different place today than it was when we began. The world has changed,” reported the Washington Post.
