Feminist Majority Foundation Announces 2003 Campus Program Award Winners

Congratulations to this year’s outstanding winners of the FMF Campus Program Awards. There were so many outstanding examples of feminist campus activism and achievement, it took three rounds of judging to narrow the field. Great work and congratulations to all the nominees and winners!

———————————————— **OUTSTANDING FEMINIST IMPACT ON CAMPUS** Winner: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SAN DIEGO FMLA Special Commendation: CERRITOS COMMUNITY COLLEGE FMLA

The UCSD FMLA lobbied for and passed a Student Senate resolution in support of Title IX, helped revise the Student Conduct Code to make it friendlier to victims of sexual assault, helped elect feminist student leaders to several student government positions, and receive regular press coverage of their public education activities and other campus activism.

———————————————— **OUTSTANDING FEMINIST ACTION** Winners: UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS FMLA & VASSAR COLLEGE FMLA Special Commendation: ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY FMLA

The UNT FMLA staged the Vagina Monologues on their campus for an audience of 1800, raising $14,000 to give to women’s organizations. The VASSAR FMLA collected 1000 Never Go Back Authorization Petition Signatures (at a school of just 2000 students) and delivered 1000 letters to their two NY Senators demanding that they filibuster any anti-abortion Supreme Court nominees.

———————————————— **OUTSTANDING NEW GROUP** Winners: DUKE UNIVERSITY FMLA & SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY FMLA Special Commendation: RUTGERS COLLEGE FMLA

In just three months the new DUKE FMLA reached 1000 students with their recruitment drive and now boasts 45-60 active members. The SFSU FMLA increased their core membership from 4 to 20 in their first semester and conducted two campus public education campaigns.

———————————————— **OUTSTANDING GOHV ACTION** Winner: SPELMAN COLLEGE FMLA Special Commendation: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN – EAU CLAIRE FMF Affiliate

The SPELMAN FMLA registered voters in coalition with the NAACP, held a feminist election issues night and conducted a “Midnight Blitz” the night before the election where they covered campus with reminders to vote and where.

———————————————— **OUTSTANDING PRESCRIBE CHOICE ACTION** Winner: CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY FMLA Special Commendation: SUNY NEW PALTZ FMLA

The CWRU FMLA successfully added Emergency Contraception to the health services provided on campus in the form of birth control cocktail EC kits and convinced the health center to advertise EC availability there. The group also held an EC teach-in and garnered local press coverage for their efforts.
