Feminist author Taslima Nasreen was freed on bail after turning herself over to authorities in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where she was wanted for “blaspheming Islam.”
“I’m happy to be freed on bail, but my life is still at risk as the Muslim fundamentalists have threatened to kill me,” said Nasreen, 36.
Nasreen was forced to flee her country in 1994 due to death threats issued because of her feminist writing, which expressed her desire to change Islamic laws that deny women equal rights. Nasreen has been in hiding since fleeing Bangladesh in 1994, and had recently returned home to care for her sick mother.
