Fetal Research Allowed in the Netherlands

On Tuesday, the Dutch health minister presented legislation that would lift the ban on research using aborted fetuses.

Els Borst argued that medical research on aborted fetuses should be permitted as long as the mother approved it and had the opportunity to change her mind. The bill would allow for fetuses aborted within 24 weeks to be used in scientific studies researching cures for epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and Alzheimer’s.

However, opponents believe that it is morally and religiously unethical and that a black market for fetuses would develop.
