The Delta Women’s Clinic, which was the target of anti-abortion arsonists in 1985, was destroyed in a fire Sunday. The blaze resulted in no injuries, but the clinic’s destruction leaves Baton Rouge, Louisiana without a single abortion clinic in town. In 1987 four men were convicted on charges in connection with the firebombing of the Delta Women’s Clinic. Officials declined to comment on whether the fire could be attributed to arson.
The clinic has also been the target of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, which staged protests in 1992 that resulted in 61 arrests. This week Operation Save America (formerly Operation Rescue) is protesting outside of Dr. George Tiller’s reproductive health clinic in Wichita, Kansas.
