First Female Pitcher

On July ninth Ila Borders became the first female pitcher to start in a minor league game. Her team the Duluth-Superior Dukes lost, but the game was a victory for her nonetheless. Borders has pitched ten innings as a relief pitcher during this season after being traded from the St. Paul Saints midseason last summer.

Borders graduated from Whittier College in 1997 where she was named the most valuable player on her team. She seemed surprised by all the media attention she received and said that until she heard from various news and sports networks around the country she hadn’t realized the importance of her start.
