Florida Passes Bill Requiring Parental Notification for Abortion

The Florida Senate voted 31-9 to pass a law that requires women under 18 to notify at least one parent before getting an abortion. The Florida House has already passed the bill and pro-choice Florida Governor Lawton Childs has not said whether he plans to veto the new law.

Pro-choice lawmakers argued that girls who cannot grant parental notification will attempt to have unsafe, illegal abortions. Anti-choice supporters claimed that the girls need only notify the parent, rather than receive their consent.

Yesterday, Florida legislators passed a law allowing drivers to obtain anti-choice license plates. Earlier this week, the Florida House voted against a measure to amend the state Constitution to permit requiring parental consent for abortions.
