Homosexuality and Condom Use, Topics in Newly Approved MD Sex-Ed Program

The Montgomery County Board of Education in Maryland unanimously approved new sex education curriculum for 8th and 10th graders that defies abstinence-only rules and includes discussion of homosexuality. Previously, teachers were only allowed to discuss homosexuality in response to students’ specific questions. The curriculum was originally proposed in 2004 but was delayed when conservative groups Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum and Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays sued to stop the curriculum.

A video demonstration of proper condom use where a sex educator places a condom on a cucumber will also be field-tested in 10th grade classrooms. These changes reflect a national trend towards comprehensive sex education. A recent study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine showed that 82 percent of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, want comprehensive sex-education for their children and 68.5 percent are in favor of instruction on proper condom use.
