House Overrides Abortion Ban Veto

The House voted today on a measure that limited surgical abortion procedures, winning the necessary two-thirds majority in the House,296-232, to overide President Clinton’s October veto. The measure may fall several votes short in the Senate, which will vote in September, closer to Congressional elections.

President Clinton commented after his last veto of the bill that the procedure is necessary to help some women avoid serious health consequences. The bill, sponsored in the House by Florida Republican’s Rep. Charles Canady, would only allow certain surgical abortion procedures when a woman’s life is at risk.
