House, Senate to Discuss Abortion Language in Bankruptcy Bill

Members of the House and Senate will meet today in a public conference to consider the House and Senate versions of the bankruptcy reform legislation passed in 2001. At issue is language introduced by Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) in the Senate version of the bill that would specifically bar perpetrators of abortion clinic-related violence from avoiding payment of legal judgments by declaring bankruptcy. The House version of the bill does not contain such language, and anti-choice forces have continuously opposed the provision. According to Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Reports, the President has indicated that he will approve “whatever bill is agreed upon by the House and Senate.”
