House to Vote on Fetal “Personhood” this Week

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act,” a deceptively worded bill that would grant legal status to a fetus. Disguised as a measure protecting women from violent crime, the bill would make it a separate offense to harm a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus while committing a federal crime. Abortion rights groups call the measure a stealth attempt to curb abortion access for women. NARAL notes that if passed, the “Unborn Victims of Violence Act” would mark the first time that a fetus would be recognized as a “person” under federal law, “with rights separate and equal to those of a woman.”
