India: Gov.-Run Company Offers Rape Insurance

India’s state-run General Insurance Corporation has offered women “rape insurance.” The new insurance coverage for rape was included as part of a larger insurance package offering coverage for more traditional injuries and hazards.

Indian women’s groups have criticized the idea that rape victims be offered monetary damages for their suffering and claim that offering insurance for the crime makes rape seem like “an accident.”

A General Insurance Corporation spokesman denied these charges and said that the company believes a monetary settlement would help women to cope with rape.
